FINNISHBANDS

JORMAS
jormas-This band was very popular in Finland in the sixties. They cut two Lp´s plus  numerous singles ...quite a few were hit singles here ...though most were cover versions in finnish language (PENNY LANE,GOD ONLY KNOWS etc)
The driving force in JORMAS was their singer/songwriter PEPE WILLBERG ... established himself as a popular soft pop star in the seventies  scoring many hits though he sometimes wandered into progressive stuff as well .. he is still active today and very popular ... among other members was guitarist HASSE WALLI who later played in BLUES SECTION (though he left JORMAS after their  first LP).
JORMAS´ first self titled LP  (HMV YDLP 1020) 1967  is perhaps the nearest you get in what comes to finnish "garage "... Suberb cuts like LOCOMOTION and DAYS,NIGHTS plus many too obvious covers. This LP is released and reissue is still available.
Second LP "SINCERELY" (PARLOPHONE PAR-LP 304)1968  veers more towards  psychedelia and heavier sounds ...on drums was future jazz "star" MATTI OILING ... the sales were disappointing and the group disbanded for good. This LP again has some decent moments (Can´t break the habit,Emperor´s Silky Knickers) but  as a whole is not very good. This LP has not been reissued and is extremely hard to find.

TOPMOST
Topmost - Some of the cuts included were kind of lightweight, but the Song
"UFO" was a hoot.  "Their Finnish accents pronounce the chorus as
"Unidentified Flying Obeeeejeckt."

The story of this band is quite like the same as the one of JORMAS´ ... They were hugely popular in Finland ( in fact had a sort of friendly "rivalry" between JORMAS and themselves) ... their self-titled album (PARLOPHONE PARLP 303)1967 has diverse music on it ranging from very soft ballads to gutsy instrumental blues ... looks as though they couldn´t have decided what sorta band to be ...The LP has a superb psychedelic cover  ...the above mentioned UFO is the highlight of the album on the whole the LP is quite lightweight. It was reissued in 1968 (STAR SWLP 4) ...both versions are extremely rare! There is not a CD or Vinyl reissue available. The band included two future record company  directors plus other celebrities.
